Promoting Sport and Exercise Medicine to the next generation
A national, non-profit society for undergraduates interested in SEM, run by foundation doctors and medical students.
What is USEMS?
Run by foundation doctors and medical students, for undergraduates
The Undergraduate Sports and Exercise Medicine Society (USEMS) is a non-profit society working to promote the speciality of Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) to interested undergraduates in the UK. We mainly work with medical students, but students of physiotherapy and dentistry, and anyone else with an interest in SEM or Sport and Exercise Science, are very welcome to follow USEMS news and events.
SEM information and opportunities already exist across the UK, spread across universities, regional societies and professional bodies. USEMS want to make it more accessible: one place to discover and promote local societies, events, education and the routes into SEM, whichever university you're at. We also work with the College of SEM to organise competitions, awards and grants to help undergraduates interested in SEM.
- 🎓
Free and open to every UK undergraduate interested in SEM, whatever you study and wherever you are.
- 🤝
Run by students and foundation doctors, for students, not a top-down professional body.
- 🧭
One home for events, education and societies across the UK, including the national conference.
What USEMS does
How we support undergraduates interested in SEM
Make SEM information accessible
Bring the most useful SEM information into one place so students can get active in the field before postgraduate training.
Advocate for SEM teaching
Provide SEM resources where the undergraduate curriculum falls short, and push for better, more consistent SEM teaching in medical school.
Explain the routes into SEM
Help students understand SEM as a career and the different routes in, not just higher specialty training but the many other paths towards it.
Connect you with clinicians
Use our network to connect students with SEM-interested doctors in their area, opening the door to shadowing and mentoring.
Run courses & events
Organise the national conference, teaching series and one-day courses through the year.
Get students involved
Opportunities in SEM blogging, research, audits, athlete screening and public health initiatives.
Maintain strong links
Work closely with BASEM, FSEM and the wider SEM community as it moves towards CSEM.
Build a network
A platform for students across the UK to network with each other and with SEM professionals.
Secure discounts
Liaise with organisers to obtain larger student discounts for SEM events and conferences.
Our community
Links with the SEM community
BASEM has supported USEMS since its advent in 2011. It has promoted, supported and provided networking and educational opportunities for students, and has sponsored USEMS events to help the next generation of SEM professionals access education during training at a reasonable cost.
Joining USEMS is completely free, we don't charge any subscription. If you'd like to go a step further, BASEM undergraduate membership costs around £2 a month and gets you much cheaper tickets to the annual BASEM conference, along with other member benefits. We'd recommend it to anyone with an interest in SEM, whatever you study.
Note: membership pricing may change as BASEM and FSEM move to CSEM, and undergraduate membership is likely to become a CSEM membership in due course.
BASEM, FSEM and the new CSEM
Sport and Exercise Medicine in the UK is currently represented by two organisations: BASEM (the British Association of Sport and Exercise Medicine) and FSEM (the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine). They are now coming together to form a single body, the College of Sport and Exercise Medicine (CSEM).
This USEMS website is built to be a stable home that undergraduate pages on BASEM, FSEM and the new CSEM can link to as that transition happens.
